For New Patients

Welcome to Baseside Dental Office. If you are considering becoming a patient, this page will walk you through what to expect at your first visit, how we handle fees and insurance, and how to get in touch.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Our goal at your first visit is to give you a thorough, honest picture of your oral health — and to make sure you feel completely informed before any treatment begins.

Your first appointment includes a comprehensive examination and typically takes about 90 minutes. Please plan accordingly when you book.

New Patient Visit — Step by Step

Step 0: New patient forms

We begin by getting to know you and understanding your concerns. To schedule an appointment, please contact us by phone, email, or through the “Contact Us” page on our website. Our team will be happy to answer any questions you may have prior to your visit.

Once your appointment is confirmed, we will send you secure online forms for your medical and dental history, which can be completed at your convenience before your visit. In some cases, technical issues may prevent access to the online forms. If this occurs, the forms can also be completed at our office on the day of your appointment. We kindly ask that you arrive 10–15 minutes early to allow enough time for registration.

Step 1: Consultation

We will start by listening. Tell us about your concerns, your dental history, what you are hoping to achieve, and anything that makes you anxious about dental visits. There are no wrong answers — this conversation helps us tailor every part of your care to you.

Step 2: Comprehensive Examination

Your exam includes:

  • Intraoral photography
  • Dental X-rays
  • Dental CT scan (3D imaging)
  • Digital impressions (intraoral scanner)
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Airway screening

Step 3: Review of Findings

Once the exam is complete, we sit down together and go through every finding using your own photos and scans. We explain what we see in plain language — no jargon, no rushing. You will leave with a clear understanding of exactly what is going on in your mouth.

Step 4: Treatment Planning & Estimate Presentation

If treatment is recommended, we will walk you through a detailed treatment plan and cost estimate before anything begins. You are never pressured to commit on the spot.

Step 5: Treatment

When you are ready to begin, we will work through your treatment at whatever pace is comfortable for you. Netflix and Disney+ are available chairside, and we have blankets, sunglasses, and other amenities to keep you comfortable throughout.

Step 6: Ongoing Maintenance

After active treatment is complete, we recommend six-monthly check-up and cleaning appointments to keep your mouth healthy long-term.

Fees & Insurance

About Our Fee Structure

At Baseside Dental Office, payment is due at the time of service. We are happy to provide documentation in English with ADA codes included to help you submit reimbursement claims to your insurance provider.

Japanese National Health Insurance (NHI)

Japanese National Health Insurance is NOT accepted at our practice. All treatment is provided on a self-pay basis.

TRICARE & U.S. Military Insurance

We are currently an out-of-network provider for TRICARE and other U.S. military insurance plans. We cannot bill these plans directly; however, we will prepare all necessary documentation to support your out-of-network reimbursement claim.

Payment Methods

We accept major cashless payment methods (details to be confirmed at opening). Please contact us if you have questions about payment options or would like to discuss a payment arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the entire visit be conducted in English?

Yes. Dr. Tanaka is fully fluent in English and conducts all aspects of care — examinations, treatment discussions, and follow-up — in English for patients who prefer it.

How do I book an appointment?

We accept appointment requests via our contact form, or email. Email is generally the fastest way to reach us.

Do you accept TRICARE?

We are not currently a TRICARE-authorized provider. We can, however, prepare the documentation you need to file an out-of-network claim yourself.

Do you see children?

Yes. We welcome patients of all ages. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your child’s needs.

What if I have a dental emergency?

If you are in pain or have an urgent dental concern, please contact us by email or phone. We will do our best to see you as quickly as possible. Please also see our Emergency Dentistry page for more information. If you require urgent dental care, walk-ins are welcome and will be seen based on the doctor’s availability.
